A licensing system for sex shops in Oxford may be introduced by the city council.

At present, sex shops in Oxford do not have to be licensed, but the council has the option to demand that they apply for a licence to operate.

Following last night's (October 14) council meeting, the Labour administration promised to consider this option. The move came after concerns expressed by Green council member Claire Palmer about a third sex shop opening in Cowley Road.

She had complained that the shop was next to cash machines and on the route between East Oxford First School and the newly refurbished Manzil Way play area.

Ms Palmer said: "The Greens are pleased that the council has finally seen the sense of moderating the activities of these establishments through licensing laws."

Executive member for the environment Mary Clarkson said: "There is concern in the community that new sex shops could concentrate in an area of the city and potentially transform a residential neighbourhood.

"I am also aware that there are currently only three sex shops and if we adopt a licensing system, shops can sell more explicit material.

"The issues need careful consideration and I am investigating now and will consult with all interested groups before making any decisions."

Mrs Clarkson addressed the licensing issue after it was raised at last night's city council meeting by Green councillor Craig Simmons, who represents St Mary's ward.

Last month, protesters campaigned to abort plans for lap dancing at the Baby bar in Cowley Road. The bar wants an entertainment licence for sessions on Sunday evenings, but local residents object to the idea.
