Residents in the west Oxfordshire village of Combe celebrated winning the Marlborough Trophy for the medium villages section in the Oxfordshire Best kept Village 2002 competition.

Combe beat Freeland, Steventon and Aston in the section.

The Marquess of Blandford, son of the Duke of Marlborough unveiled a sign on Sunday at a rain-swept ceremony attended by about 50 people, followed by refreshments.

Judges praised the village for its close knit community and cleanliness.

Parish councillor Sue Goodman said: "It looks lovely here -- I think our success is down to lots of individuals working hard to keep their gardens

pretty."
