A project which has helped of hundreds of people find homes in the Banbury area has its first full-time manager.

Nikki Bell has been appointed to run and develop the Rent Deposit Guarantee Scheme, which helps people on benefits or low incomes rent accommodation in the private sector. The scheme was launched eight years ago by the Banbury and District Housing Coalition and has been administered by Banbury Homes Housing Association.

Ms Bell, 38, previously worked with the Banbury Young Homeless Project. She is now based at Banbury Homes' offices in George Street, Banbury, and her appointment is being funded by a three-year grant from the National Lottery's community fund.

The rent deposit scheme was set up to help people who cannot raise an initial deposit demanded by private landlords. The scheme guarantees to foot the bill if tenants fall behind with their rent or cause damage not covered by insurance.

Ms Bell said: "The scheme has already helped more than 500 people find decent accommodation, and I hope I can encourage more landlords to take part.

"They can be confident that the scheme is readily accessible and is being supported and supervised by someone who can deal with any day-to-day issues that may arise. Tenants now have someone to turn to if they need help to maintain their tenancies."
