County councillor Les Sibley has cast doubt on the validity of a consultation exercise on options for improving Market Square, Bicester.

Mr Sibley, who is also a town councillor, said: "About 50 per cent of the 490 people who took part in the consultation were schoolchildren aged five to 15 years.

"While I applaud children becoming involved in the future of their town, I do think their views should be treated with caution."

The consultation came as district councillors looked for an alternative to controversial plans to open up a quiet cul-de-sac to improve traffic flows in Bicester Market Square.

Cherwell District Council has agreed to ask Oxfordshire County Council to come up with other ideas to the proposal for Wessex Way and Chapel Street.

Residents of retirement flats and cottages at Saxon Court in Wessex Way are opposed to the move, saying their peace and quiet would be destroyed by traffic.

Bicester South district councillor Lawrie Stratford said: "We want the county council to come up with alternatives and to explain why Wessex Way should be linked to Chapel Street."
