School pupils have been learning about the need to stay safe when lorries are around.

Almost 1,000 children from schools throughout the country took part in a road safety week, which was organised by Bibby Distribution.

Southwold Primary School, in Holm Square, Bicester, was the first in the town to take part in the campaign.

Brian Riddle, Bibby's driver development manager, put together the programme.

The topics included blind spots in a driver's line of sight, and what children should try to avoid when a vehicle is turning or stopping.

Mr Riddle said: "This type of campaign has never been carried out in schools before.

"We felt the issues particularly important at the moment, especially in the light of the walk to school projects being promoted around the UK."

One of the company's lorries was taken to the schools as part of the presentation, and children were able to look around it.

Bibby, which has a depot off the Bicester ring road, have also launched a children's poster competition to highlight the dangers of large vehicles.

The company's road safety tour will visit more schools next month.
