Firefighters targeted Berinsfield with free smoke detectors in a bid to make the village a safer place.

Fire prevention officers knocked on doors to discuss fire safety with residents and offered to fit the free alarms.

Kirsty Cresswell, of Abingdon Fire Station said: "We see Berinsfield as a pretty vulnerable place as it is a long way from fire stations. We want people to have the smoke detectors fitted -- they are potential lifesavers.

"Fire safety is so important to protect individuals and their property -- a smoke alarm is the first line of defence."

She said similar sweeps were planned elsewhere.
