Another open air theatre is to take shape in Oxford after city councillors gave the go-ahead for a new outdoor stage in Headington Hill Park.

Creation Theatre Company, which has a stage on land at Magdalen College School, near The Plain, Oxford, has a history of successful shows at venues throughout the city.

Last year visitors flocked to see Creation's production of Shakespeare's Macbeth and Midsummer Night's Dream.

The company, which has used the BMW plant in Cowley as a venue in the past, wants to stage its shows in the park between May and September.

It has been granted permission to build a 500-seat open-air theatre, including portable toilets, a store and a dressing room.

Some people who live nearby had expressed concern that other users of the park would lose out over the summer.

But officers said the area was well served by other parks and open spaces.

They said the theatre would enhance the cultural life of the city.

Councillors agreed unanimously to grant permission.

David Parish, producer and artistic director for Creation, said: "It's our hope that we will deliver excellence in all aspects of the event and use the unusual location to develop a very special theatre experience for all age groups and types of people."
