A veteran of two quadruple heart bypass operations has raised £1,270 for charity by swimming 22 miles -- the equivalent of the English Channel.
John Flood
After taking up swimming as serious exercise last month, John Flood decided to raise money for the British Heart Foundation with a long-distance swim at the Didcot Wave pool. Mr Flood, 69, a former Merchant Navy captain, said: "I decided to keep going just for the hell of it, and to carry on raising money.
"I reckon I am already more than half-way back to England."
He underwent his first bypass at Harefield Hospital in 1989, and a second at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, three years ago. To support Mr Flood, call 01235 210182 or collect a sponsorship form from the One Stop Shop in Didcot Civic Hall, Britwell Road.
The idea for his swim came from the charity Aspire, which is holding a sponsored swim to help people with spinal cord injuries.
