The referee at the centre of the row over an alleged racist remark, which led to Mark Wright's suspension and eventually his resignation as Oxford United manager a year ago, is back at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday - and once again on racial awareness day.

Joe Ross will take charge of the Division 3 game beween Oxford and Shrewsbury.

It was almost exactly a year ago, and similarly in a match in which football's fight against racism was being highlighted, that Mr Ross last appeared at an Oxford United home game, against Scunthorpe.

He sent off two United players - Paul Moody and Phil Bolland - and dismissed a furious Wright to the stand.

In his match report to the FA, he accused the then Oxford boss of making a racist remark.

Following pressure from a Sunday newspaper, the FA eventually decided to charge Wright. United chairman Firoz Kassam, sensitive to the issues of racial awareness, suspended him.

Wright, who had maintained his innocence, quit before any hearing could take place, and it was never held. He is now in charge of Chester City.

United have already announced that they are highlighting the fight against racism at tomorrow's game, and are giving their full backing to the Kick it Out campaign's second National Anti-Racism Week of Action.

United's players will wear anti-racism T-shirts, officials will wear Kick it Out badges, there will be an article in the programme and announcements to publicise the initiative.
