Leaders Oxford Harlequins were given their stiffest test of the season, when they scrambled home 15-11 against Abbey at Horspath Road.
After playing into a strong wind, Quins trailed 11-0 at half-time, as Abbey scored a try and two penalties.
Quins, who lost prop Henk Hattingh with a shoulder injury in the second half, opened their account when centre Richard Rouse went over for a try.
Then a well-worked move resulted in No 8 Paul Nye going over for a try which Chris Penney converted to give them a 12-11 lead.
After going close to scoring further tries, Quins, with their back row outstanding, completed the scoring with a penalty by Penney.
