A councillor has warned that installing CCTV cameras in Wallingford will not solve the town's problems.

South Oxfordshire District Council Labour member Nick Hards is the only cabinet member who has spoken out against the scheme.

He claims the only solution is to stop people misbehaving in the first place.

He said: "There are problems in just about every town and most of the larger villages in this country.

"Young people go out on a Saturday evening, get much too drunk then make nuisances of themselves.

"Putting in CCTV will not stop them doing it, although it may change where they do it.

"There is a fundamental problem that CCTV will not address and that is why the people behave like they do in the first place."

Last week, Dr Hards was the only person who voted against Wallingford getting a survey of its CCTV needs completed before a bid to fund it went into the council's budget.

The cabinet had been addressed by Wallingford Town Council clerk Andrew Rogers, who pleaded for work to start installing cameras.

He cited the Hallowe'en activities of a group of youths who smashed a town hall window, showering members of the Royal British Legion with shards of glass during a meeting.

Mr Rogers said: "The police need all the help they can get, and CCTV is one way to help them. We need it in Wallingford without delay."

Cabinet member Sue Cooper said: "I hope Wallingford isn't pinning too many hopes on CCTV, because it does require police action to follow up what is seen."
