Keen environmentalist Sandra Simpson organised a skip for her housing estate in Witney to help residents get rid of their garden waste.

Forking out for the sake of the planet

Earlier this year Miss Simpson, of Thorney Leys, travelled to Utah, in the US, after winning an award from the Oxford-based Earthwatch charity.

She was helping research into how the environment of toads and insects had been affected after a stretch of road across the desert was closed.

Earthwatch encourages people to get involved with environment projects.

Mrs Simpson arranged for West Oxfordshire District Council to provide a skip for green waste in the car park next to Burwell Hall on the Thorney Leys estate.

Miss Simpson said: "I don't think councils are doing enough locally. It is a 12-mile round trip to take green waste to Dix Pit, near Standlake."
