A campaign to stop domestic violence against women has the backing of South Oxfordshire District Council.

The White Ribbon campaign takes place from November 18 to 25, to raise awareness about domestic violence and collect funds to prevent it.

The council will be selling £1 white ribbons from council offices and one stop shops.

The money raised will go to support the work of the Oxfordshire Women's Aid Refuge.

Some of the cash will also be donated to Womankind World Wide, an international women's rights and development charity dedicated to ending violence against women. According to Government figures, one in four women experiences domestic violence.

One in 20 will be raped and two die every week at the hands of current or former partners.

Sue Cooper, the council's cabinet member for community safety, said: "I hope people will support the campaign.

"We must do everything we can to raise awareness of the support available to victims and show the perpetrators that domestic violence will not be tolerated in today's society.

"Please help the campaign -- everyone has the right to live a life free of violence."
