Firefighters left their picket line at Didcot to rescue a motorist trapped in his car.

Royal Navy crews with a Green Goddess and a special Response Equipment Support unit were already at the scene in Milton Road outside Milton Business Park where the car had collided with a lamp post on Saturday (November 23) morning.

The driver was trapped by both legs after the steering column collapsed onto his body in the crash.

The Royal Navy crews had already removed a door of the car using special equipment when two crews of fulltime and part-time firefighters arrived on two red fire engines from Didcot.

An ambulance crew advised that unless the driver could be released quickly, one of his leg would have to be amputated -- a special surgical team was already on the way from Oxford.

The Didcot firefighters, who were at the scene for half-an-hour managed to release the driver who was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, with serious injuries. His broken leg did not need amputating.

Fire Brigades Union spokesman, Mark Ames, said the firefighters' specialist skills had been the crucial factor in helping save the driver's leg.

Firefighters from Eynsham broke the picket line to help the Army free a person trapped in a vehicle after a crash at Swinford Toll Bridge at 1.30pm on Saturday. Three people were hurt in the accident, including one with a severely injured right leg.

A Green Goddess was called out with a rescue team to the M40 junction with the A40 to deal with another accident at 6.30pm on Saturday.

MIlitary crews extinguished a car on fire in Long Hanborough on Saturday morning. Crews also dealt with a fire at a student house in Iffley Road, Oxford, shortly after 12pm. No-one was injured.
