An imaginary fluorescent tattoo which glows when an animal contracts foot-and-mouth disease has won two young Oxford scientists second place in a national competition.

The Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurs Scheme challenged research students to draw up a business plan for an imaginary company.

The tattoo company, Fluoromed, was founded by Tamasin Graham, an anthropologist studying Roman culture, and Radha Nair, a student at the zoology department's behavioural ecology research group.

Their imaginary virus-sensing tattoo, called VirAlert, would allow diagnosis using a hand-held device.

Ms Nair said: "With VirAlert, a diagnosis can be made in seconds."

They also received a prize from patent lawyers Eric Potter Clarkson for best consideration of intellectual property.
