Oxford United expect to have their biggest away league followings of the season in their final two trips as play-off fever grips the fans.

Safety officer Tony Ashley estimates nearly 1,500 supporters will be cheering on the U's in Saturday's Division 3 match at bottom side Exeter.

And the club have taken 2,000 tickets for the crunch final away game at promotion rivals Scunthorpe on April 26.

Oxford have been one of the best supported clubs away from home in their division.

But although they took 5,310 fans to Arsenal for the third round of the FA Cup in January, and 1,564 to Charlton for the second round of the Worthington Cup last October, their biggest following for a league game was 1,165 who saw an epic 2-0 win at Rushden & Diamonds on December 28.

After the visit to Exeter's St James Park, Ian Atkins's team take on Bristol Rovers at the Kassam Stadium on Easter Monday, and for both games the grounds are expected to be nearly full.

Ashley said: "I'd be disappointed if Bristol Rovers don't bring at least 2,000 because they are well supported, so we're expecting between 8,000 and 9,000 for that one.

"Being Easter Monday, it might attract many 'armchair' Oxford United followers to come along and see what the team is like with the play-offs very close.

"The Exeter game is not all-ticket. We have space for 1,700 fans and there's no way we'll fill that, although a lot of supporters will be going. I think we'll have about 1,400 there.

"We had talks with Exeter last week about ticketing and whether it should be ticket-only for away fans and not home supporters.

"But I'm not in favour of that arrangement because you can end up with away fans trying to get in the home sections."

Ashley said United are likely to wait to see what happens during the crunch Easter fixtures before making any decision on whether the final home game of the regular season, against York City on Saturday, May 3, will be all-ticket.
