The expansion of the Kidlington Sainsbury's supermarket would kill off other village shops, a public inquiry heard.

Andrew Hornsby-Smith, representing Kidlington Parish Council, told the public inquiry that at least three village shops, including a greengrocers, butchers and a Spar shop, closed after the opening of the supermarket in 1991.

He said that larger supermarkets in the village had also suffered, with some losing up to 40 per cent in sales between 1991 and 1992.

Mr Hornsby-Smith told the public inquiry, which has now finished, that he was concerned village shops would lose out again if the expansion was allowed.

He said: "Shops have fought hard to claw their way back and some, unfortunately, had no choice but to give up. The parish council does not want them to have to go through this again."

Cherwell District Council approved Sainsbury's planning application last July, but Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott called an inquiry over concerns about the impact it would have on other shops and traffic congestion.
