A rally team doctor has been reprimanded by medical watchdogs after performing an indecent act in front of a woman and her 10-year-old daughter.

Dr Mervyn Wheeler, who used to work for the Banbury-based Subaru rally team, was found guilty of misconduct by the General Medical Council's professional conduct committee.

He will be able to continue practising because he was not struck off.

The committee was told a woman and her three children were parked at Cherwell Valley services, on the M40, in September 2000, when Dr Wheeler parked next to them and indecently exposed himself.

He was arrested by police, who found he was carrying two lumps of cannabis resin. Bicester magistrates convicted him of possessing drugs, and fined him £50, but he was not convicted of indecent exposure, but he was bound over for six months.

Dr Wheeler, formerly of Silverstone, Northants, and now of Barcelona, Spain, lost his job after the incident.

The committee said the indecent act "appeared to be an isolated event".

The strong reprimand will remain on his record.
