Sites for a 100ft mast are being investigated after Network Rail admitted its preferred location in Wolvercote, Oxford, may be too close to a primary school.

Wolvercote Primary School governors complained to Network Rail that installing a radio mast near the school, in Fairlawn End, would pose a health risk to children.

Network Rail said radiation levels would meet legal limits.

But it has agreed to invest- igate two other locations on railway land in Oxford away from residential areas.

The sites being considered are at Water Eaton, near Kidlington, on the Oxford to Bicester line, and on the Oxford to Birmingham line near the A34 Pear Tree roundabout, north Oxford.

Both were suggested by Richard Lawrence-Wilson, chair- man of governors at Wolvercote Primary School.

In a letter to Mr Lawrence-Wilson, Network Rail's head of communications Madelene Klaasen-Bos, said: "I have asked the project engineer to reconsider the site, given the proximity to the school."

Although he welcomed the investigation, Mr Lawrence-Wilson, who supports the Wolvercote Against the Mast campaign, was concerned Network Rail had not already considered alternative sites.

He said: "The school was never consulted and I can't help but think the organisation thought it could rush the mast in without ever fully investigating all possible sites."

In her letter, Ms Klassen-Bos was unable to say whether other sites were considered.

Network Rail said Wolvercote was among a number of sites included in plans, but could not give any more detail.
