Ian Atkins says he is relishing the final weeks of the season, and believes that two wins will secure his Oxford United side a play-off berth.

Ian AtkinsThe U's have just four games remaining - away to Exeter and Scunthorpe and at home to Bristol Rovers and York - with the weekend victory over Kidderminster ensuring their fate is in their own hands.

Although United currently lie in fifth place, only three points separate them from tenth-place Lincoln.

And while many fans have accepted that a play-off berth is the best Oxford can manage, Atkins is still clinging to the possibility that third-placed Wrexham and fourth-placed Bournemouth may stutter on the final run-in.

"I can't wait for it all to unfold," Atkins said. "This is what seasons are made of.

"I think that we need to win two more matches to book a play-off place. It may be that we need to pick up the odd extra point.

"We have still got that automatic place in our sights, but the play-offs are special. If we don't get that third spot, I feel we can go all the way in the play-offs."

However, Atkins says that whatever happens between now and May, he feels that Oxford have had a good season - better than most people thought they would.

And he is taking heart from the fact that despite an appalling home record, the U's are still right in the shake-up.

"The supporters have been fantastic, and I think that we have given them value this season," he said.

"For the last five or six seasons, they have been pumping their money into the club and not getting anything back, but this season they have got something to cheer.
