Radley had to settle for second place in Saturday's opening Southern League Division 1 meeting as their title defence got under way in Southampton.

They finished five points behind Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow, but it was a satisfactory start for the club, who later this year take part in the UK National League.

There were plenty of fine performances, with the under 15 team winning 13 of their 21 events.

Lucy Boggis was in record-breaking form, setting a new Radley mark in the javelin with a huge throw of 32.96m.

Debutants Kimberley Smith and Hannah Willis both recorded new personal bests and two first places, while Clare Triggs won the A string long jump with a leap of 4.89m.

There was a fine victory for the 4x100m relay team, with Triggs, Smith, Boggis and Tara Kafke winning in 52.3secs.

The senior team displayed their usual determination, Rachel Brenton winning the long jump and triple jump in style. Brenton leapt to a new personal best of 5.76m in the long jump, then recorded 12.05m in the triple.

In the 800m, Sophie Plateau crossed the line for a fine victory in 2.16.7, while Kay Reynolds won the A string high jump, clearing 1.50m.

Result: 1 WSEH 219pts, 2 Radley 214, 3 Crawley 144, 4 Team Solent, 5 Reading 135.
