Passengers may no longer be allowed to catch buses from Abingdon's High Street, if plans to cut congestion and pollution are introduced.

Bus stops in the street may be closed and replaced with set-down points. New pick-up stops could be provided in Stratton Way.

The ideas are two of several ideas being considered as part of the town's Integrated Transport Strategy, launched nearly two years ago, which is said to be making "steady" progress.

The proposals have come from a working group that concentrates on the town centre.

A report said bus stops outside the old Regal cinema site and in Bridge Street should stay but the existing stops in Stratton Way could be removed if new stops were introduced on either side of the street. Another idea is for a bus stop at the Old Station Yard junction, in Stert Street.

The advisory group believes there should be more parking for disabled people's cars spread throughout the town centre and more taxi ranks. A new layout for The Square is being considered to create a T-junction, with service bays and parking for disabled drivers.

The advisory group recommends that wider pavements should be introduced where possible. Widening pavements in Stert Street and the High Street and reducing traffic to a single lane in a 20mph zone are part of the original blueprint and regarded as the cornerstone of the strategy.

Work on these projects is expected to start next year.

Among the achievements of the scheme so far is the completion of the western extension to the Audlett Drive cycleway, from Thames View to the Waitrose store.
