A former builders' site office in Wallingford has helped a cricket club make a massive saving on the cost of a new pavilion.

Committee member Nick Cross, with president Gerald Howat, vice chairman Nigel Hessey and chairman Trevor Denning

Linden Homes donated its former site office, at Paul's Malt housing development, to Moreton Cricket Club, saving the club more than £30,000.

The partly-completed pavilion will be opened by the club captain and former vice chairman John Culley on Saturday at 1.45pm.

The opening ceremony will be followed by a match between the president's XI and the chairman's XI.

Chairman Trevor Denning said: "Thanks to the gift of the building from Linden Homes, and the hard work of members who excavated the foundations and the drainage, the pavilion has cost us only £15,000.

"A new building could have cost at least £50,000."

Gerald Howat said the club's former pavilion had been built from recycled materials -- a pre-1914 hut from Didcot Ordnance Depot, and old War Department tables which were used as flooring.

The decision to replace the pavilion is part of a five-year development plan, leading to the club's 150th anniversary in five years' time.
