Relatives of an 84-year-old Witney pensioner are angry she being forced to stay in hospital because a housing association cannot mend her back door.

Violet Cable collapsed at her home and was found by a relative on Saturday.

The relative had to break a pane of glass to get into the house and West Oxfordshire Housing said that because they did not have the replacement glass in stock they had been unable to repair it.

A spokesman for West Oxfordshire Housing, John Barnham, said: "We don't hold any glass in stock so it has to be measured up and made to fit the door."

Mrs Cable's son Michael, of Colwell Drive, said: "When my wife Joy looked through a window she could see her lying on the floor.

"My mother keeps her doors locked and bolted so my nephew broke the pane of glass in the back door and climbed in."

Mrs Cable was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and treated for mild pneumonia and cuts and bruises.

The door was boarded up by West Oxfordshire Housing, who took over West Oxfordshire District Council's housing stock a few years ago.

Mr Cable said: "The doctor and social workers treating my mother say she can go home when the door's been properly repaired.

"I've spoken to West Oxfordshire Housing three times to try to get them to fix it straight away. But they say they have to wait for the glass.

"We're furious at their attitude."

Mr Barnham said: "We are waiting for the glass and have told the family it will be a maximum of five working days.

"As soon as the glass comes in we will get the door repaired."
