More than 100 illegally held guns have been handed in to police during a gun amnesty in Oxfordshire.

Police said people in the county had handed 134 guns to the force during the national Get Guns off the Streets amnesty.

The highest number of weapons, 68, was handed in to officers in north Oxfordshire, 41 guns were surrendered in south Oxfordshire, and 25 were surrendered in Oxford.

Thames Valley Police received 478 guns in what was described as a successful nationwide operation.

The month-long amnesty, which ended on 30 April, meant owners of illegal weapons who surrendered them were not prosecuted.

The breakdown of weapons surrendered in the Thames Valley showed 124 prohibited firearms, such as handguns, and 354 weapons that can be kept legally with a licence, such as shot guns.

The amnesty figures were announced at Abingdon police by Supt George Wilson, head of the Thames Valley Police Tactical Support Unit.

Mr Wilson said: "We'll be coming down hard on those who hold illegal firearms so they can be removed from circulation and not fall into the hands of criminals."
