A prom night for school leavers in Witney ended on a sour note when police were called to deal with rowdy youths.

Residents in Wood Green complained about noise and wheelie bins being overturned outside their homes at 2am yesterday.

Police confiscated alcohol from a group of youths dressed in ball gowns and tuxedos and made them clear up the rubbish.

The names of 12 teenagers -- five girls and seven boys -- were passed to the town's Henry Box School.

One Wood Green resident, Steve Singh, said: "It was atrocious.

"Rubbish was strewn all down the street.

"There was a stream of obscenities from these drunk guys and screeching girls, all dressed up, but out of order."

The antics followed separate leaving parties, called proms, for Year 11 pupils at Henry Box and Wood Green Schools.

Both events, for 15- and 16-year-olds, finished at about 11pm.

They are now established as one of the highlights of the school year, with teenagers dressing up and some arriving in hired limousines. Headteacher of Henry Box, Rod Walker, said: "This sort of post-party nonsense leaves a sour note to what was a super day."

Wood Green headteacher Cym Savage said she was investigating to see whether any of her pupils were involved.

Thames Valley Police spokesman David Campbell said: "Police seized alcohol from some teenagers and told them to clear up the mess left by overturning wheelie bins.

"This antisocial behaviour in the early hours is unacceptable.

"The police will be taking no further action, but we are confident that the school will take appropriate steps."
