Oxford 50, Swindon 40 (agg 88-87): The Silver Machine, boosted by maximums from Andy Smith and Jan Steachmann - his first since 1993 for Oxford - saw off the Robins in style, but just missed out on the bonus point in Friday's British League Cup derby at Oxford Stadium.

The track, back in racing order after last week's turmoil, rode well, and although tricky in places, provided some fine all-out action from both teams.

Andy Smith was little fortunate to take the opener after Oliver Allen appeared to have the race in the bag when an engine problem stopped him stone dead.

Next on stage was the exciting young Czech Republic prospect, Lubos Tomicek, and he didn't disappoint, gaining a fine second place after passing two riders.

There was drama in heat five where Jernej Kolenko and Oliver Allen clashed coming out of the pits. Allen confronted Kolenko before order was restored.

Soon after, Smith and Staechmann gave the Silver Machine the edge with an easy romp in heat six, but with Travis McGowan caught napping, the Robins hit back.

A cracking ride from Staechmann followed as, finding himself at the back, he wound up his machine to pass the whole field.

Seb Ulamek was a little hasty at the tapes and opted to start 15 metres back in the re-run but, despite Kolenko blocking his way through for some of the time, made it through to second place, leaving the home side 30-24 to the good.

Heat ten saw some fine action when Smith and Staechmann were left stranded at the gate, but Oxford's top pairing soon put matters right with another 5-1.

Three successive tactical substitions from the Robins followed as the teams went into the final heat on level terms with the bonus point up for grabs, but disaster struck the home side.

Skipper McGowan, going all out to try and get past Sadler, got just too close and both riders bit the dust, leading to McGowan's exclusion. Andy Smith won the re-run, but it was not enough for the bonus.

Oxford: A Smith 15, Ulamek 11, McGowan 10+1, Staechmann 9+3, Kolenko 2+1, Tomicek 2, Scarboro 0. 50pts.

Swindon: Neath 12, Sadler 8, J Smith 7, T Allen 3, Holloway 3, O Allen 2. 40pts.
