Pippa Funnell continues to dominate the eventing world as she became the first rider to win the Blenheim Petplan International Horse Trials for the third time as well as taking third place on her second horse.

Pippa Funnell So far this year she has won three four-star events at Badminton, Burghley and Lexington and is in the team for the European Championships at Punchestown in Ireland, which start later this week.

Funnell went into the show jumping with just one fence in hand after going fast and clear on Jurassic Rising over the cross county course.

She knocked one fence down but was still able to clinch the title.

She finished third on the stallion Viceroy II.

In second place was Australian Philip Dutton on Nova Top.

Young French rider Amelie Billard, 18, who had led after two-and-a-half days of dressage, had a fall on the cross country, dashing her dreams of a place at her first British competition.

Highest-placed Oxfordshire rider was Chris King, of Wanage, on Peaceful Warrior, who came 28th.

Jo Aston, of Heythrop, was 63rd on Solcum Maximus at her first ride at the event, while Jon Evans, from Sparsholt, retired Royal Brigadoon on the cross country course.

The Asia Pacific Championship was won by Australia, with New Zealand second and Japan third. This means New Zealand win a place at the Olympic Games in Athens next year as Australia had already qualified.
