More than £1,800 has been raised in memory of a pensioner who asked for money instead of flowers at her funeral to help people suffering from thirst in developing countries.

The money is still pouring in from friends of Constance Fox, of Aldridge Close, Benson, 67, who died on August 5 after developing an infection of the pancreas.

She was in hospital for seven weeks and her request for donations came after spending some time on a ventilator when she was unable to drink, moving her to sympathise for those who live struggling without clean water supplies.

Now her family has completed everything from sponsored bike rides and car boot sales to raise money for Water Aid in her memory.

Ms Fox, a former accounts assistant at Wadham College, Oxford, was a popular resident of Benson, where she grew up. She is remembered as a generous woman who did much to encourage others to be charitable.

Her sister Catherine Keogh, of Port Hill, Benson, said: "She was always ethical and committed to helping just causes. She had a great love of people and over the years had been a faithful and generous friend to many."
