BT is being asked to bar incoming calls at a phone box in Oxford, following concerns that it is being used to set up drugs deals.

The telephone kiosk outside the Coven nightclub, in Oxpens Road, is often used by drug addicts who get their dealer to call them back, according to a Coven club night promoter.

Speaking at the central, south and west area committee meeting, Oxford city councillor Dr Mike Woodin said he was contacted by an un-named promoter at the Coven concerned about the phone box, which he believed was being used by people arranging drug deals.

Dr Woodin said: "Apparently the dealer rings the caller back and arranges to meet them in the area, so we want BT to bar incoming calls."

He added that a concealed corner behind the Coven nightclub and the covered entrance of the ice rink were often frequented by drug addicts.

Insp Sarah Price said that historically there had been a drug problem in the area.

Dr Woodin met a member of the city council's Crime and Nuisance Action Team and Pc Paul Phillips, Thames Valley Police's community beat officer of the year, last week to discuss the situation.

City council spokesman David Penney said the council had written to BT to arrange an incoming call ban.

Steps to improve the fencing between the Coven and the city council's coach park, so that the nightclub can secure its site, will also be taken.

The Coven nightclub and BT were both unavailable for comment.
