Former Oxford United winger Joey Beauchamp has re-signed for Ryman League Division 2 side Abingdon Town.

Beauchamp, 32, has been playing for Morrells of Oxford Sunday League side Real Islip, and Barton United Reserves in the Oxford City FA on Saturdays.

Now Town boss Paul Berry has snapped up the U's legend, who retired from the full-time game last year due to a persistent toe injury.

Beauchamp, whose brother Luke also plays for Town, made his first debut in March last year after he was signed by the then boss Pete Lamont.

However, he made only a couple of appearances, as he was still having problems with his injured toe.

Beauchamp said: "I am a lot fitter than when I played for Town last year and should be OK.

"I'm playing three times a week and also play five-a-side football in the week.

"It's going pretty well at the moment, I'm creating goals as well as scoring them. I'm enjoying my football, but I wanted to play at a higher level.

"Paul had been on at me about playing and I thought I would give it a go and see how I get on.

"Obviously my brother plays for Town and I have a lot of friends there. I often go and watch Town anyway."

Beauchamp added: "I'm in a position where I don't have to work, so I'm being a man of leisure at the moment, and just weighing up my options."

Berry said: "It's great to sign someone with his skills.

"I think we need a bit of experience and Joey can give us that."

Beauchamp is expected to play in Saturday's league trip to Leighton Town.

He was at Culham Road on Saturday as he watched his brother score twice in the 5-5 draw at home to Kingsbury Town, which leaves them third from bottom of the league.

Berry said: "It was an amazing game. I have never taken part in a league game like that."

Our defending was not the best. We gifted them five goals, though we did score some good goals of our own. "Everytime one side got the ball, it looked like they would score. It's a shame Joey can't play in defence!

"But at least we didn't lose, which is good," added Berry, whose side had netted only once in their previous four games.
