Detectives have praised the actions of pensioners who refused to be duped by distraction burglars in Oxford.

Police believe the message is getting through to pensioners that they should never allow unexpected callers into their homes, particularly those claiming to be from utility companies.

Just a handful of offences involving bogus officials have been reported in January

Up to three white men tried to trick their way into homes in Palmer Road, Wood Farm, between 2pm and 3pm on Thursday, January 22, claiming to be water workers. However, they did not manage to steal anything.

They called at the home of a 79-year-old woman who was suspicious, but one of the men barged his way in. She followed him around her home, as he claimed to be checking plumbing, before he made excuses and left empty- handed. Bogus water officials called at the home of a neighbour, also 79, but were turned away.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about a red Saab car, with an orange stripe to the rear, possibly L or M registration, to get in touch. It was seen in the Headington area at about the same time and is thought to be linked to the offenders.

Det Sgt Vince Gilio, of Oxford police's burglary team, said: "I would praise highly the courage and vigilance of these householders who have done very well to turn these suspicious individuals away.

"The more we're able to repel them, the less inviting Oxford will seem as a place where they can come to attempt what is a nasty and cold-hearted crime."

A Thames Valley Police spokesman added: "We're grateful for the Oxford Mail's continuing support in getting this very important message over to its readers."

Anyone with information about the men should call the police on 08458 505505.
