We can have little sympathy for Clare Newson, the 19-year-old girl jailed for falsely accusing a man of rape.

While one of her neighbours described her actions as a 'stupid mistake', the Oxford Mail sees it more as a wicked fabrication that not only caused an innocent man unbearable anguish and drove him from the town, but also wasted countless hours of police time.

We agree that the victims of rape should be given anonymity, but the name of Andrew Grindle, the victim of a malicious lie, has been broadcast far and wide.

It is time more thought was given to the argument that all parties involved in sexual assault cases should remain unnamed until a guilty verdict is established.
