Abingdon's 30th annual horse show attracted entries from four counties and organisers hope they have cleared the £2,000 barrier for local charities.

There were 201 entries and several hundred spectators at the event on Sunday at Rye Farm meadow.

Conditions under foot were firm and the weather was ideal for horses and riders, said show secretary Peggy Rogers of Didcot.

"We had one more entry than last year and we hope to have beaten last year's cash figure of £1,900 for local charities but we will not know the total amount until next week. It was our 30th show and we are very pleased to see that it has maintained its popularity."

The entrants took part in 36 classes in the show. It began in 1974 and has become one of the leading events in the Oxfordshire equestrian calendar.

Money raised from the event will be shared between the two local Riding for the Disabled Association centres at North Hinksey and Abingdon, the Island Farm Donkey sanctuary at Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, near Wallingford, the day hospital and physiotherapy department of Abingdon Hospital and the Abingdon branches of the Samaritans and Salvation Army.
