People with satellite dishes outside their houses and shopkeepers with "inappropriate" shop signs could be targeted in an effort to enhance Banbury's historic areas.

Cherwell District Council has drawn up proposals to improve the appearance of the town's "character" areas and extend the current conservation zones.

If the plans are approved, householders in conservation areas will have to apply for consent to put up satellite dishes at the front of their houses.

And new restrictions will stop shopkeepers putting up new signs or changing their advertising boards in a manner considered out of tune with the area.

Anyone wanting to comment on the plans must write to Cherwell District Council planning department by Friday.
