Angry residents are demanding urgent action over a damaged road.

Cracks in the surface have worsened in the recent torrential rain, and now water pours from a large hole which is 3ft deep.

Families on the Elms Rise estate, Botley, Oxford, say they have put up with deteriorating road surfaces in The Garth for years, but claim their current requests for repairs are being ignored.

Resident Colin Warmington said the ever-present water seeping from the cracks in the road caused dangerous driving conditions, particularly when it froze.

Mr Warmington, 55, said: "It's been like this for about two years now. Then two months ago, this hole appeared with water pouring out of it, and you could see the road surface around it sink if a vehicle ran over it.

"I got fed up with people coming up and asking me what I was going to do about it. They thought that because it was outside my property it must be my responsibility."

Mr Warmington said he phoned the highways department and was assured they would send someone out.

Neighour Alan Punt, who also complained to the council, said: "The condition of the roads around here is pretty poor anyway, but this hole and subsidence is just awful. It's disgusting that nothing has been done after all this time."

County council area engineer Colin Carritt said: "We are keeping a close eye on it because we may need to go down to investigate it, which will involve us having to apply for a road closure, and that normally takes a minimum of four weeks. We don't think it is extremely urgent because we don't think the subsidence is going to escalate. We prefer not to make a knee-jerk reaction."
