Sir -- So Oxford City Council has spent £43,000 on a new state of the art street cleaning vehicle (Oxford Mail, August 26).

The council seems to think it is all right to spend vast amounts of council taxpayers' money by saying "the cost of the vehicle was allowed for in the last budget".

What this means is that taxpayers cannot do a thing about stopping this money being spent, because it already has been. Never mind what was allowed for in last year's budget, what is the council going to spend this year?

At least if we knew, we could protest about it.

We didn't have much choice in this new cleaning machine which, if you ask me, is an ideal candidate for an entry in the 'wacky races'.

Do the streets of the centre of Oxford really need to be washed down? With all the recent rain, I would have thought a vehicle that sucks up the water would have been better than one that sprays it out.

And where can one expect to see this expensive piece of equipment operate? Not on the council estates of Rose Hill, Blackbird Leys or Wood Farm, that's for sure.
