One of Oxford University's most acclaimed classics scholars, Prof Oliver Lyne, has died of a heart attack at the age of 60.

Prof Lyne Prof Lyne, who was Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Balliol College for more than 30 years, enjoyed an international reputation as one of the most distinguished classicists of his generation, and was adored by students.

A prolific author, he also produced many influential articles on Classics subjects, and at the time of his death last month was working on new projects, including an extensive study of daughters in Greek and Latin literature.

He briefly held Fellowships at Fitzwilliam and Churchill Colleges at Cambridge before moving to Balliol in 1971. In 1999 he was appointed Professor of Classical Languages and Literature at Oxford.

Balliol colleague Prof Oswyn Murray said: "He was a wonderful and committed teacher."
