Residents have been betrayed, says Bicester's MP, after Government ministers cancelled a meeting about the future of the town's community hospital.

Banbury MP Tony Baldry had organised talks with the minister responsible for community health, Stephen Ladyman, to hear why there were no funds available to build a 30-bed community hospital.

Labour town, district and county councillor Les Sibley, and Ian Inshaw, chairman of the North East Oxfordshire NHS Primary Care Trust, were to accompany Mr Baldry.

The minister has said he will no longer be able to keep the appointment, now that the date for the General Election has been announced.

Mr Baldry said: "It's very said that ministers are not prepared to face up to their responsibilities. Instead, people remain in limbo over what funding for health services Bicester's growing population will be given. Bicester has been betrayed."

The PCT wants to build a £3m primary care centre on land it owns off Oxford Road, instead of a £13m, 30-bed hospital.
