National League 1: A high-scoring win for London Welsh rendered Henley's 19-16 victory over Rotherham meaningless on Saturday as they crashed out of the division.

Fly-half Matt Honeyben kicked 14 points and scrum-half Dan Smaje raced away for a fine opening try in a tight game at Dry Leas.

But the Hawks were sunk by relegation rivals Welsh's 40-30 defeat of Nottingham, which gave them a vital bonus point and consigned Henley to League Two.

This left Henley an unassailable six points adrift with one game to play and a bitter taste in the mouth after a deserved home victory.

Man-of-the-match Smaje gave the Titans the best possible start with a first-minute try, but his team were still scrapping for victory at the death.

Stealing the ball from the first scrum, he sprinted 50 metres to touch down by the posts and give Honeyben an easy conversion for 7-0.

A scrappy period of play saw Titans awarded five penalties to Hawks' one and visiting full-back Jon Benson converted two straight-forward chances to narrow the deficit.

Honeyben and Benson traded penalties before Honeyben missed a sitter from in front of the posts that would have extended the one-point cushion.

He made amends soon after the break to make it 13-9, but Titans' exploited the blindside at a ruck to score through Michael Wood.

A Benson conversion made it 16-13 before Hawks' Pete Davies chased his own kick to threaten the Titans' line.

But a second try was not forthcoming and Henley needed Honeyben's third and fourth penalties to go19-16 clear with ten minutes remaining.

The Hawks held on for a win despite a late scare from Titans' winger David Settle.
