According to Tony Brett (Oxford Mail, April 18), recent polls show that the Liberal Democrats are the first choice for students because they support their stance on top-up fees and tuition fees.

Liberal Democrats are putting out leaflets saying that they were instrumental in scrapping tuition fees in Scotland and that they are committed to a fair deal for students.

Fair? In practice, they mean "no up-front tuition fees": they just charge you after graduation instead. In Scotland fees still have to be repaid after graduation.

Even David Blunkett said at the time: "It is difficult to see how anyone in Scotland has gained, with 40 per cent of students not paying fees in the first place and now having the non-fee deferred so that they have to pay after they have left university."

Phil Willis, Lib Dem education spokesman, said in 2003: "We can't have three-year honours degrees because they are simply not worth it in academic or commercial currency."

How encouraging for those of us on three-year courses.

I will not be supporting the Liberal Democrats or Labour - neither genuinely stands for an end to university fees. CRAIG ASTON, Keble College, Oxford
