Craig Davies said that youth team coach Darren Patterson should take the credit for his award as Oxford United's young player of the year - after keeping him on the straight and narrow.

The former Manchester City striker burst onto the scene at United, scoring six goals and earning an international call with Wales.

But Davies, who has a reputation as a bit of a hot-head, says that Patterson's influence has been crucial.

"I can't thank Darren enough for everything he has done for me," Davies said. "He has been the one who has kept me in line.

Patterson, however, refused to take all the credit.

"Craig struggled to begin with when he first came here, but once he settled down, there was no holding him back," he said.

"We have had our fall-outs over the past season, but Craig has progressed so much.

"It takes a brave management to throw in kids at this level, and so Ramon (Diaz) and Horacio (Rodriguez) should take a lot of credit.

"I know that Craig will be a real big asset for this club if he continues to improve at the rate he has been."

Davies is now eyeing up a clean sweep of awards next year.

"The season has been disappointing because we have not made the play-offs, but next season I am sure we can do better," he added.
