David Rose with one of the holes on Waynflete Road Residents have greeted work on potholes near their homes with guarded enthusiasm -- two weeks after a driver's tyre burst, almost causing an accident.

David and Janet Rose, of Waynflete Road, Barton, said they called Oxford City Council a number of times to complain about holes in the tarmac outside their home.

On Friday, (June 3) council workers filled in some, but not all, of the potholes.

Mr and Mrs Rose said the entire road needed resurfacing.

Mrs Rose said: "They've filled in two potholes but within a week it will be out -- it's a bit of a bodge."

She said the road moved every time a bus went over it.

A city council spokesman said permanent repairs could be made before the end of the summer.

Mrs Rose said: "I'm pleased -- but only if it does happen."

Last week, a driver's tyre split when her wheel got caught in a pothole. Witnesses said she was forced to swerve across the road, narrowly missing parked cars.

Mr Rose, who was in his home at the time, said: "There was an almighty bang. The driver was quite shaken.

"If my car had been parked outside she would have smacked straight into it and if someone had been coming the other way there is no way she could have stopped."

"These potholes are slowly getting worse. Someone with a push bike or a motorbike will come along and have a nasty accident."

The council spokesman said: "We are aware of the problem and we made the surface safe on Friday. We will now be assessing the road to recommend the repairs needed."
