Dave Mackay says he is determined to fight for his right back place at Oxford United following the arrival of Lee Mansell.

Mansell joined the U's from Luton Town on Tuesday, Brian Talbot's fourth signing since taking over as manager.

And Talbot has indicated to the 22-year-old from Gloucester that he sees his role at the Kassam Stadium as on the right side of defence.

But Mackay, the current holder of the No 2 shirt, says he won't give it up without a fight.

The former Dundee player had asked about the possibility of returning to Scotland because his wife was homesick.

But Mackay, speaking from Scotland, said: "I've spoken to the manager again and told him that I'm definitely staying. I'll be coming back to Oxford next season.

"When I told him my wife was a little bit homesick, he was great about it and said if you want to speak to other clubs you can do.

"My agent spoke to a couple of Premier League clubs up here - Dunfermline and Dundee - but there was nothing really suitable, and especially with Dundee being relegated.

"Quite honestly, the state of football up here financially isn't great, so I'm better off in England.

"My wife and I have spoken about it and she's quite happy to spend another year down south."

Mackay added: "I didn't know about Lee Mansell signing but if that's the case I'll just have to fight hard to keep my place."
