Ordinary people with big plans for their community can apply for a grant to get their dream project off the ground.

Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action (OCVA) has £15,000 worth of small grants to give to individuals with a flair for stimulating community activity under its 'Community Champions' scheme.

Alison Baxter, chief executive of OCVA, said: "These are user-friendly grants aimed at up-and-coming community leaders and groups.

"Administering the fund is an eye-opening experience and introduces us to small groups and individuals who would not have traditionally approached us for advice or funding. These are the community leaders and social entrepreneurs of the future."

The scheme has been run by OCVA for four years, and is funded by the Department for Education and Skills.

Last year more than 15 awards were made ranging from £500 to £2,000, including £1,300 to help set up a bowling club for the visually impaired.

Kevin Pamphilon, who is registered blind, had never applied for any kind of funding before.

He said: "I wanted to organise a support group and combine it with a social event where blind and visually impaired people could participate and have fun."

Last month the team, who meet fortnightly at the Kassam Stadium, came third in the Westfield British Blind Sport Winter League Final in Sheffield.

The grants for this year's Community Champions awards are available for projects taking place in Oxford and the surrounding area.

Applications must be submitted by June 15. For further information contact Manuela Da Costa-Fernandes at OCVA on 01865 251346.
