CITY council leaders tonight approved revised plans for a £50m college campus in North Oxford.

Keble College is planning to build on the former Acland private hospital site, between Woodstock and Banbury Road, acquired four years ago for £10.75m.

The Keble development will be across the road from the new £500m Oxford University quarter being created on the old Radcliffe Infirmary site.

Keble unveiled its original plans in February last year but withdrew them following opposition over the demolition of a Grade II listed Victorian building.

In the new plan, above, most of the 1897 building has been incorporated into the new college quad.

Members of the council’s strategic development control committee approved the revised application, subject to further details of the design of the research building fronting Woodstock Road.

Colin Cook, executive member for the city centre, said: “The college has responded to previous concerns and the new accommodation will take students out of some private rented accommodation in the city, which is badly needed.”
