The recent coverage of children’s deaths at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital has been blown all out of proportion.

While any death from surgery is an awful event, the publicity surrounding the hospital itself has in a veiled way put responsibility on the surgical teams themselves.

The hospital trust has tried, quite rightly, to inform the public.

But, at the same time, it has attempted damage limitation.

The impression is that any faults lie with the surgeons.

Yet, from my own personal experience of major cardiac surgery, the hospital cannot be faulted.

My recovery has given me a new lease of life, albeit amid other serious illnesses.

To put further pressure on Prof Stephen Westaby (my surgeon) in having to deal with children’s surgery in addition to adult operations seems unfair on Prof Westaby – who is, without doubt, the finest surgeon in this field, and shows great care for patients.

The trust would be better employed in publishing and pressurising the Government to fund the heart pumps required to help reduce the risks of fatality.

I am sure every parent will sympathise with those parents who now have a painful wait to see if their child’s heart problems are going to be dealt with.
