Glaswegian foursome Errors formed in 2004 and have worked tirelessly ever since to establish a presence among the big hitters in the UK’s ever-expanding electro scene. They’ve toured with dance legends Underworld, are signed to a label founded by Scottish noise mongers Mogwai, done remixes for just about everybody and have been compared to Chemical Brothers, Broadcast and The Rapture. Now touring in support of their second album Come Down With Me, Errors have resisted the urge to add lyrics to their compositions, sticking with the long instrumental tracks that marked their debut record.

It seems a big hurdle to jump over, the lack of lyrics, but as Errors take to the stage and the drum beats start to whirl, the synths judder into life, a kind of hypnotic trance falls over the Tavern and Errors proceed to play a superb gig. Their tracks are cultured in their structure, they build gently, not offering the hook right up front, teasing and tantalising the crowd, before dropping a mesmeric keyboard refrain, good enough to soundtrack any dance floor in the world. Bridge or Crowd, A Rumour in Africa and Sorry About the Mess all weave in catchy grooves and bubbly bass lines; there are rises and falls, all adding up to a compelling live experience. They combine the relentless driving beats of LCD Soundsystem with the layered approach of Passion Pit and have the ability to conjure up poppy hooks that arena fillers like the Prodigy or Pendulum would be proud of. The hooks are far less in-yer-face than in those two acts, but are just as memorable in their own way. Instrumental indie electronic is not a genre that is going to set the pulse racing for most of the record-buying public, but if it sounds the least bit appealing to you, then you’ll never see anyone do it better than Errors.
