YOUNGSTERS from the Oxford Academy signalled the start of what will be the city’s biggest ever litter-pick.
More than 1,500 volunteers will be taking part in this year’s OxClean Spring Clean 2010 tomorrow and Saturday, with community groups tackling litter-strewn locations across the city.
The litter pick is backed by Oxford East MP Andrew Smith.
He said: “The message is that we are proud of our city and we show our pride by the responsibility we take by doing our bit to keep it clean.
“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the OxClean initiative and all the groups across the city, who will make it the best OxClean ever and get Oxford sparkling.”
Pupil Ryan Ferguson, 12, said: “I think Oxclean is such a good idea. It looks a lot better and gives a good impression of the school to visitors when the campus is free of litter.”
The Civic Trust runs OxClean in partnership with the Oxford Mail’s sister paper The Oxford Times and Oxford City Council.
Each group will carrying out a two-hour litter pick during Friday or Saturday.
