Police stopped 25 people as part of speed checks in Witney today.

The checks took place between 8am and 10am in Burford Road and police said they were organised 'as a result of community concern'.

Twenty-four of the drivers exceeding the 30mph speed limit were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices of £60 and a three-point endorsement on their driving licences. Fifteen of those drivers will have the option to attend a Speed Awareness Course in place of the Fixed Penalty Notice.

The remaining driver, who was travelling at 57mph, will be summonsed to attend court.

PC Mark Pilling, Road Safety Constable for Oxfordshire, said: “It was concerning that many drivers were exceeding the speed limit considerably, in one case at nearly double the legal speed limit.

"This check took place close to a signed school crossing at a time when many children would have been on their way to school.

“We will be continuing to spread road safety messages across Oxfordshire through enforcement and education. Motorists can expect to see further speed checks at this site and others in the future.”
